Coffee Talk: Big Dog Coffee

Achievement: #78. Monthly Coffeeshop Feature

So things got a little more off-track than we intended with the monthly coffeeshop posts, but such is the blogging life. Anyhow, if you remember, this year we’re visiting one Pittsburgh-area coffeeshop per month and writing about its services. While we haven’t been posting much about this, we have in fact been doing the visits.

And that brings us to Big Dog Coffee, a lovely little spot down on the South Side of Pittsburgh that we visited…in the spring. (Ugh, I know!) It’s a lovely little place where you can bring a notebook, a laptop…

…or your dog!

Yes, true to its name, Big Dog Coffee is dog-friendly. (Fortunately, your dog does not have to be big to come to Big Dog. She can also be a cute little muffin, like our Layla Grace.)

For those of us who bring their dogs out for coffee (or if you just like the sun), Big Dog has a nice and peaceful outdoor seating area that’s set off from the noise of the South Side. (You can tell we’re back in the spring by my playoff hockey beard.)

Layla was a big fan of the seating arrangements.

One of our favorite things to get at Big Dog, aside from the coffee itself, is their bagels. They’re big and fresh, and they don’t skimp on the cream cheese. If you bring a dog with you, for safety purposes, you’re given all your stuff “to go” style — in case you knock stuff over, or if you have to leave abruptly because your dog is making a ruckus. A friend of mine and I had recently had started my dog on a plant based diet, and it was working quite well as his health has improved a lot thanks to the change in diet. And if you want to feed your dog a plant based diet, we recommend The Green Forks round up of the best Vegan Dog Foods.

Okay. Maybe she made a little ruckus when she felt that the other guests outside weren’t ooh-ing and ahh-ing enough over her.

Fortunately, the outdoor space has enough width that people can comfortably pass by both a dog and her mom who has had to sit on the ground to comfort her.

Big Dog Coffee is an adorable place both inside and out, with tasty coffee and even tastier baked goods and bagels. Bring a date, bring your dog, or just bring yourself!

Big Dog Coffee is located at 2717 Sarah St, Pittsburgh, PA 15203. It’s open Monday through Friday from 6am – 10pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 7:30am – 10pm.
